Rania Abouzeid
'New Yorker' Contributor | Author, 'No Turning Back: Life, Loss and Hope in Wartime Syria'
Rania Abouzeid is an Australian-Lebanese journalist, author and commentator who has reported from across the Middle East for more than two decades. Currently a New Yorker Magazine contributor, she has covered wars, revolutions, political upheaval and human rights issues for the world’s most prestigious publications. She has won awards in every category of her work; her print journalism, television documentaries, and books.
Abouzeid is the author of three books about the Syrian war including the widely acclaimed No Turning Back: Life, Loss, and Hope in Wartime Syria. She is the recipient of numerous fellowships including from Harvard, New America, and the European Council on Foreign Relations.
A straight talker known for her solo reporting from some of the world’s most dangerous hotspots, Abouzeid was the first to interview members of Al-Qaeda in Syria, face to face, and had unparalleled access to the group. She has worked undercover to report on sex trafficking in Iraq, travelled with an Afghan anti-kidnapping police squad, reported from the prisons of Pakistan’s Karachi, and extensively covered Lebanon’s Hizballah, among many other stories.
Often interviewed on television and radio in America, Europe and the Middle East, Abouzeid is as comfortable giving a keynote speech as she is engaging in a small roundtable conversation with policy experts or answering questions from a large audience. She has moderated high-level panels, including at the United Nations for the Madrid Club of former presidents and prime ministers, and frequently addresses students of journalism and international relations at universities around the world.
A graduate of the University of Melbourne, Australia, Abouzeid lives in Beirut.
