
Dean Ball
Dean W. Ball is a prominent strategist, writer, and policy expert focused on artificial intelligence, emerging technologies, and the future of governance. Recognized as one of the leading voices shaping the national conversation around AI policy, Ball currently serves as a Senior Fellow at the Foundation for American Innovation, a Policy Fellow at Fathom, and a Visiting Fellow at The Heritage Foundation. He is also the author of the influential AI-focused newsletter Hyperdimensional, widely read by policymakers, technologists, investors, and business leaders.
Ball most recently served as Senior Policy Advisor for Artificial Intelligence and Emerging Technology at the White House Office of Science and Technology Policy, where he was the principal staff drafter of America’s AI Action Plan. During his government service, he also advised the National Science Foundation on AI strategy and co-chaired several national initiatives involving machine learning, AI research infrastructure, and emerging technology governance. His work has positioned him at the center of the evolving debate over how governments and institutions should respond to rapid advances in artificial intelligence.

He began his policy career as a Research Fellow in the Artificial Intelligence & Progress Project at George Mason University’s Mercatus Center, where he focused on the intersection of AI, economics, and governance. He currently serves as a Visiting Lecturer at Yale Law School, where he co-teaches courses on frontier AI governance and emerging technology policy.
