Dr. Glenn Steele Jr. is Chairman of xG Heath Solutions, an independently operated venture Geisinger launched to help healthcare organizations create value and improve quality, leveraging Geisinger intellectual property and expertise on issues such as population-health data analytics, care management and health IT. He is the former President and Chief Executive Officer of Geisinger Health System (2001-2015), where he led the rural health system to defy dispiriting national trends and become what many consider a model for the future of American healthcare. Geisinger Health System has been continuously heralded as one of the best, most innovative and most forward-thinking systems in the country, a model for high-quality care at below-average costs.
Dr. Steele achieved this by focusing on value and accountability in improving outcomes, and insisting on evidence-based standards. He effectively used technology, including electronic health records and patient engagement systems, to coordinate care, provide near-real-time feedback, and continually assess and improve care. He created a culture of continuous innovation, and experimented with new models of payment and delivery.
Health systems across the nation and around the world now look to Dr. Steele and Geisinger — an organization that "figured out how to do things right and how to teach other people" — as a resource for understanding how to improve care in an ever-changing healthcare environment.
A physician and researcher, Dr. Steele has authored or co-authored nearly 500 scientific and professional articles on innovations in healthcare delivery and financing, as well as the cell biology of gastrointestinal cancer and pre-cancer.
Before joining Geisinger, Dr. Steele served as the Dean of the Biological Sciences Division and the Pritzker School of Medicine and Vice President for Medical Affairs at the University of Chicago, as well as the Richard T. Crane Professor in the Department of Surgery. Prior to that, he was the William V. McDermott Professor of Surgery at Harvard Medical School, President and CEO of Deaconess Professional Practice Group, and Chairman of the Department of Surgery at New England Deaconess Hospital in Boston.
Dr. Steele is past Chairman of the American Board of Surgery, Harvard Medical Faculty Physicians Board at Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center, served as Chairman of the Board at Premier, Inc., and served on the American Hospital Association (AHA) Board of Trustees, among others. He now holds a position at xG Health Solutions, an independently operated venture launched by Geisinger to help other healthcare organizations create value and improve quality. He is Vice Chairman of Health Transformation Alliance (HTA), a group comprising 25 leading U.S. corporations, leading the development of HTA strategies and initiatives that facilitate change in the healthcare industry and improve the ways in which healthcare benefits are purchased for employees.
Named numerous times to Modern Healthcare's lists of the Most Influential People in Healthcare and the Most Influential Physician Executives, among others, Dr. Steele provides unparalleled practitioner’s insight into the future of healthcare.
