He currently is developing an artificial ovary so women with cancer could undergo radiation treatment and still be able to have children and developing business models that use regenerative medicine to cut healthcare costs.Dr. Russell is the Founding Director of the McGowan Institute for Regenerative Medicine, jointly established by the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine and UPMC Health System as a center of expertise and education in therapies that reestablish tissue and organ function.

The McGowan Institute is the most ambitious regenerative program in the nation, a major center for research and clinical work in tissue engineering, adult-derived stem cell research and cellular therapies, biosurgery, and artificial and biohybrid organ devices.
In addition to these directorships, Dr. Russell is a Distinguished University Professor of Surgery and has secondary appointments in the departments of Chemical Engineering, Bioengineering, and Rehabilitation Sciences & Technology.

Dr. Russell also is the Executive Director of the Pittsburgh Tissue Engineering Initiative and the Director of the National Tissue Engineering Center.
He has given more than 250 national and international invited lectures. He holds 14 patents and has 13 patents pending.
